Should I do a Roth conversion?

The short answer

A Roth conversion means paying tax now on money in a traditional IRA or 401(k) so it can grow and come out tax-free later. It can make sense when you expect higher taxes later or want to leave tax-free money to your kids and grandkids. The key is converting the right amount in the right years, not all at once.
